Guide
How to find money for debt without doing a budget.
Budgets fail for a boring reason: they are upkeep. Categorize, reconcile, re-plan, fall behind, feel bad, stop. You do not need categories to find money for debt. You need to know your flow, and the flow can be read once from the last month of your bank statement.
Categories answer the wrong question
A budget asks "where did the money go?" and expects you to answer in thirty buckets. That is accounting, and it is useful to an accountant. The question you actually have is simpler: "how much can leave checking before payday without anything bouncing?" That question has four inputs and no buckets. The first guide works the subtraction; this one is about finding the inputs, and the money hiding inside them.
Read your flow, once
Open the last 30 to 60 days of your checking account and do these four things. It takes about an hour and you will not need to repeat it.
- Mark the paychecks. Amount and day. Two of them tell you the rhythm: weekly, every two weeks, twice a month, monthly. Note whether the amount is steady.
- Mark everything that repeats. Rent, car, insurance, phone, utilities, streaming, gym, storage, the app you forgot. Anything with the same merchant on roughly the same day each month is a bill, whether you think of it as one or not. Write the amount and the day it lands.
- Everything else is your burn. Add up the remaining debits, the groceries and gas and the small stuff, and divide by the number of days you looked at. That is your everyday spending per day. For most households it is the number they have never seen and the one that explains the most.
- Pick a buffer. A floor checking never goes under. $200 is a reasonable default; raise it if your income is irregular.
That is the whole model. Income rhythm, bill skeleton, burn rate, buffer. You did not categorize anything.
Where the money is usually hiding
In the bills you did not know were bills
Step two almost always turns up two or three recurring charges you had stopped noticing. Cancel the ones you would not sign up for again today. That money was already leaving; now it goes to a card instead. This is the only "found money" that is genuinely found, and it is usually $30 to $80 a month.
In the burn rate, but not the way you think
You do not have to cut the burn to find money. You have to know it, so the amount you send to debt is sized around it instead of colliding with it. Most people who send "too much" to a card did not overspend afterward. They sent an amount that ignored the groceries they were always going to buy, and then borrowed the groceries back on the same card.
In the timing
The safe amount is largest the day after payday, before the bills go out, and it shrinks to zero the day before the next one. Sending a little each day, sized to what is left, gets more to the card over a month than one big send that has to be undone. It also never asks you to guess.
The two rules that keep it safe
- Minimums first, always. Every card's minimum is a bill in step two. Nothing extra goes anywhere until they are all covered.
- Never send what you will borrow back. If the send makes you charge the same card next week, it was not a payment. It was a loop with interest on it.
Why it holds up without maintenance
A budget breaks the first month you do not update it. The flow model does not need updating because it is a description of your bank account, not a plan for it. Bills move; the skeleton moves with them. The burn rate drifts; a rolling 30-day average follows it. The only decision you make is the buffer, and you make it once.
What Advizel does with this
Advizel reads this flow from your real transactions instead of asking you to. It detects your income and your bills, keeps a rolling everyday-spending rate, and each morning hands you the one amount that is safe to send toward debt today, with every line that built it one tap away. No categories to sort, no budget to maintain. It is read-only, so you always make the payment yourself, from your own bank.
Let it read your flow for you.
Advizel is on Google Play. Connect your accounts, or add them by hand, and the four numbers are found for you every morning.
